It’s been almost two years since the last SQL release on Flow Vinyl, the ‘Velour’ EP, but it’s been worth the wait. The sound of Amsterdam-based Pim van Horssen, otherwise known as SQL, is a unique fusion of progressive house and techno sensibilities, and ‘Take It As It Comes’ is a fine example of what the prolific producer does best.
Starting with a pulse of minimal techno, van Horssen takes the track on a hypnotic journey packed with exquisite twists and turns, Spacey melodies, intricate layers of percussion and a menacing bassline create dramatic moments within the track, which always stays true to its essential groove. ‘Take It as It Comes’ is definitely one for losing yourself on the dancefloor.
Vince Watson steps up to the plate for a remix that fuses techno with hints of old school house. The renowned techno DJ and producer, now relocated from Glasgow to Amsterdam, beefs up the groove as well as adding extra synths and piano to create a funk-fuelled masterpiece.
This release also includes a second original track from SQL, ‘Palermo’. Again underpinned by a minimal techno groove, it’s a deeper, darker companion to ‘Take It As It Comes’ reinforced with mutated strings and synth sounds. With both tracks, van Horssen has shown himself to be a highly skilled producer who is not afraid to bring flair and imagination to the electronic music template. A perfect fit for Flow Vinyl, in other words.
